corylea: A woman gazing at the sky (Default)
[personal profile] corylea
I was thinking about Independence Day and reflecting that although I love the ideals that my country claims to believe in -- things like freedom, equality, and justice for all -- when I look around the United States of America, I rarely find those ideals here today. I find them most reliably in Starfleet, which is part of why I'm such a rabid Trekkie.

And then [personal profile] minoanmiss posted a poem by Langston Hughes, and I saw that Mr. Hughes had said it all before me and far more eloquently than I.  I don't usually grok poetry, but this particular poem is more like an essay in a shorter, punchier form.

Most of my friends already read [personal profile] minoanmiss , but if you don't, or if you missed the poem, I highly recommend it. You can find it here.
